One of the hottest new restaurants in San Diego is Trust, an urban rustic restaurant in the Hillcrest neighborhood! Using locally sourced ingredients to put a spin on your favorite dishes and drinks, it’s no wonder Trust has become one of the most talked-about dining concepts in the city.

Trust serves dinner daily, but it’s their weekend brunch that’s really a crowd-pleaser. Some of our favorite items that we tasted on the brunch menu include the Lemon Meringue French Toast and the Pancakes With Fried Chicken. The French Toast was decadent and delightfully lemony. The pancakes were the perfect savory accompaniment to the juicy yet crispy fried chicken. And of course, how can you have brunch without a round of mimosas? Try the Trust Mimosa made with aperol or one of their fruity flavors like blood orange!

The restaurant itself is beautiful and trendy – the interior is decidedly industrial chic. Yet it still feels welcoming! Trust is the perfect place to enjoy a lazy Sunday brunch with friends or savor a romantic dinner with a loved one.

For 75 years, this seaside staple in La Jolla has been known for its incredible views and the pounding surf that creates dramatic displays outside the restaurant’s windows. Recipe: Double Layer Pumpkin Cheesecake

What You Need:

  • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 (9 inch) prepared graham cracker crust
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, sugar and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Blend in eggs one at a time. Remove 1 cup of batter and spread into bottom of crust; set aside.
  3. Add pumpkin, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the remaining batter and stir gently until well blended. Carefully spread over the batter in the crust.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until center is almost set. Allow to cool, then refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight. Cover with whipped topping before serving.

If you live in Carmel Valley or Sorrento Valley, Corner House Cafe must sound familiar! The family-owned business has been impressing our taste buds since 2000, and is a hot lunch spot due to it's impressive menu, and central location. The cafe offers a wide array of food, anything from pizza to wraps, but specializes in hot and cold sandwiches.

As adults, sandwiches seem to be an underrated food group due to the fact that we consumed countless PB&J's while growing up. After discovering Corner House, sandwiches have become a popular food item for us once again. If you are in the mood for a hot sandwich, the "Iron man" is a fan favorite and consists of Grilled Chicken Breast, Avocado, Swiss, Honey Mustard Dressing, Tomato & Sprouts on Sourdough Bread. Our favorite cold sandwich is the "Turkey Avocado" that includes turkey Breast, jack, avocado, onion, tomato, lettuce & mayo on sourdough Bread.

Be sure to order the "special sauce" too...it's a perfect compliment for any sandwich on the menu!

Recipe: Savory Pumpkin Hummus

What You Need:

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons tahini
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans garbanzo beans, drained
  • 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup toasted pumpkin seed kernels, or more to taste
  • 1 pinch paprika

Directions:

  1. Pulse lemon juice, tahini, garlic, and salt together in a food processor or blender until smooth. Add garbanzo beans and olive oil and pulse until smooth. Add pumpkin, cumin, and cayenne pepper; process until well blended. Transfer hummus to a container with a lid and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
  2. Fold pumpkin seeds into hummus; garnish with paprika.

Good news for dog lovers, the cafe is very dog-friendly. It is rare that you will ever see less than five adorable dogs relaxing on the patio, and be sure not miss the picture of dog trainer extraordinaire, Cesar Millan, that is framed next to the register!

The beach-casual cafe serves breakfast and lunch all day, and makes some of the best hot drinks. If you are in the mood for breakfast, our go-to healthy item is the Powerhouse scramble that comes with with egg whites, soy sausage, spinach, tomato, feta cheese, black beans, and a spinach tortilla on the side. For lunch-lovers, the sandwiches are drool-worthy and are served with the best homemade cilantro pasta.

Before leaving, do yourself a favor and order the Comfort Bowl. Don't let the name deceive you as it is a warm drink that consists of frothed soy milk, honey, and chamomile tea.  Although simple, it is surely one of the most delicious things we have ever been lucky enough to taste!
